This applies both to our servers (servers, drives, peripherals) and our own equipment (all laptops are second-hand, as well as monitors, phones, etc.). Servers that are no longer operational are either sold or used as backup servers.

Ramon’s house is equipped with solar panels and produces more energy than it consumes. It’s also heated and cooled with air conditioners and a heat pump. Ramon drives a 100% electric car, which is mainly charged using surplus solar energy via a smart Zappi charging station.

As mentioned earlier, but worth repeating, we only travel green to short- and mid-distance events. We’ve traveled to cities like Antwerp, Berlin, and Paris by train or bus. In 2024, we also traveled to Barcelona by train.

We implement built-in caching so pages don’t need to be rebuilt each time. We filter out bad traffic, so servers focus on what they’re meant for. This includes blocking spam and hacking attempts. Every website also gets a CDN for efficient data handling.

Our goodies are not throwaway items, they’re made to last. We keep our promo materials as reusable as possible by avoiding event names or dates. We’re still using cotton tote bags from past WordCamps!

Our business cards are made of plastic and every team member receives just one. Each card has a QR code and NFC chip, but no address info, so they stay relevant for years, unlike paper cards.

We use ECC certificates, stronger and more secure than the older RSA/DSA types. Even better, they’re smaller and more efficient. Serving these certificates uses less CPU power and is faster, which reduces energy consumption. Every customer gets the ECC version, regardless of provider.

Our laptop chargers max out at 65 watts. Based on 52 weeks of 40-hour workweeks (more than real use), this totals 135.2 kWh per year, about 0.056 tons of CO₂. With 31–46 trees needed per ton, each laptop requires about 1.7–2.6 trees. We buy 1 bund per laptop.
